VERISIGN READY TO SUPPORT COMPLETE SET TRANSACTIONSVeriSign Announces the First Successful Integration Of Online Issued SET-Compliant Certificates For Cardholders, Merchants and Payment GatewaysMountain View, CA., March 5, 1997 - VeriSign, the leading provider of digital certification services for Internet access and electronic commerce, announces another major step forward in pushing the industry closer to deploying Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) based credit card payments on the Internet. Working with Maithean and IBM, VeriSign last week demonstrated the first successful integration and online issuance of certificates for all three entities required for a SET transaction. These entities include the cardholder, merchant and payment gateway. This announcement signifies VeriSign's readiness to support the live roll-out of full SET with interoperable certificate issuance. In this demonstration, IBM Net.Commerce Manager successfully requested merchant and payment gateway signature and encryption certificates from VeriSign. At the RSA Data Security Conference in January 1997, VeriSign and IBM demonstrated the first successful online issuance of cardholder certificates. Maithean, using its NetPay SET Payment System™, successfully exchanged the SET messages required to obtain new certificates for the cardholder, merchant and payment gateway using hardware and software based cryptography. SET, an Internet payment specification developed by Visa, Mastercard, IBM, VeriSign and other technology vendors, calls for cryptographically-prepared digital certificates to be used as the virtual equivalent of plastic payment cards in electronic transactions. By enabling electronic shopping, SET brings tremendous benefits to consumers in the form of fraud reduction and consumer privacy. It helps the merchant by providing a standard way to easily implement this new and powerful technology. VeriSign Inc. is the world's leading Internet Certification Authority, the trusted third party that authenticates, issues and manages digital certificates on the Internet. VeriSign Digital IDs enable trusted electronic commerce by authenticating the individuals, organizations and content involved in an electronic transaction. VeriSign has issued its branded Digital IDs to more than 15,000 Web sites, 600,000 individuals and is delivering customized Digital ID solutions to corporations worldwide including Novus Services, Toppan Printing and Visa International. VeriSign, headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., was founded in April 1995. The company is privately held and has been funded by strategic industry partners including Ameritech, AT&T, Cisco, Comcast, First Data, GemPlus, Intuit, Microsoft, Reuters, RSA, Security Dynamics, Softbank and Visa.
